American Beauty Cake

Ingredients

• 2 oz red food coloring plus 2 oz water
• 3 Tbsp instant chocolate Nestle Quik
• 12 c shortening
• 1 12 c sugar
• 2 eggs
• 1 c buttermilk
• 2 12 c cake flour
• 12 tsp salt
• 1 Tbsp vinegar
• 1 tsp baking soda

Directions

1. Mix the first 2 ingredients together and let stand until needed
2. Cream together the shortening sugar and eggs
3. Add coloring mixture
4. Add buttermilk and beat 1 minute
5. Add flour and salt beat 1 minute
6. Remove from mixer
7. Fold in by hand the vinegar and baking soda that has been smoothed together just before adding to cake mixture
8. Pour into 2 greased and floured 8-inch cake pans
9. Bake at 350 for 30 to 35 minutes or until done
