Coffee Can Ice Cream

Ingredients

  • 1 c milk
  • 1 c whipping cream
  • 12 c sugar
  • 12 tsp vanilla extract
  • nuts or small pieces of fruit if desired
  • rock salt
  • crushed ice

Directions

  1. Combine first 5 ingredients in a clean 1 pound coffee can with a tight fitting plastic lid
  2. For extra security tape the lid to the can
  3. Place the 1 pound can inside a 3 pound coffee can with a tight fitting lid
  4. Pack the crushed ice around the smaller can Pour almost 1 cup rock salt over the ice
  5. Put the lid on the 3 pound can
  6. Roll the can back and forth on the floor or the sidewalk for 10 minutes
  7. Remove the inside can carefully making sure no salt solution drops into the ice cream
  8. Stir the ice cream mixture with a rubber spatula
  9. Replace the lid
  10. Drain the ice water and place cans inside each other
  11. Pack with more ice and salt
  12. Roll back and forth 5 more minutes
  13. Makes about 3 cups
