German Pretzels

German Pretzels

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg yeast
  • 1 12 c warm water
  • 1 tsp salt table salt
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 4 c flour
  • 1 egg
  • coarse salt

Directions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in the warm water
  2. Add the table salt and sugar
  3. Blend in the flour
  4. Put on bread board and knead for 5 minutes or until smooth
  5. Divide into 4 equal parts
  6. Roll each part separately
  7. Cut into 5 equal pieces
  8. This will yield 20 small pieces each of which will be rolled like a rope and formed into a pretzel
  9. Place on lightly greased cookie sheets
  10. Flip over brush each pretzel with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt
  11. Let rise 20 minutes
  12. Bake at 375 for 10 minutes or until lightly browned
  13. Cool and place in airtight container and freeze Thaw at room temperature and warm in oven
  14. Serve plain or dip in cheese or mustard
