German Spice BarsLebkuchen
Ingredients
- 1 13 c honey you can substitute some molasses for honey
- 34 c sugar
- 3 Tbsp butter
- 2 c flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 12 tsp soda if using some molasses
- 12 c blanched almonds optional
- 14 c each chopped citron candied orange and lemon peel
- 1 12 to 2 c more flour
- 14 tsp ginger
- 12 tsp cardamon
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 18 tsp cloves
Directions
- Heat honey and sugar slightly in a pan
- Add butter
- Add 2 cups flour and baking powder beat well
- Add nuts citron peels and spices
- Add 1 12 to 2 more cups flour until you have a thick pliable dough
- Pat it 14 inch thick into pans three 8 x 8-inch cake pans and one 9 x 9-inch cake pan
- Bake about 25 minutes When cool cut in squares and ice with Lemon Glaze
- Make this ahead for Christmas
- Keeps 6 months when in an airtight container
