German Steamed Slaw

Ingredients

  • 3 lb cabbage shredded
  • 3 large onions chopped
  • 1 lb bacon
  • 1 12 Tbsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp pepper
  • 2 Tbsp celery seed
  • 1 28 oz can tomatoes
  • 2 c vinegar
  • 34 c sugar

Directions

  1. Fry bacon and reserve the grease
  2. Chop cabbage and onions In a large heavy pot mix cabbage onions salt pepper celery seed and tomatoes
  3. Add sugar and vinegar to warm bacon grease and then add to the cabbage mixture
  4. Cook slow until cabbage is very soft and translucent
  5. Stir occasionally
