Ingredients

  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 5 c flour all-purpose
  • 5 tsp baking powder
  • 1 c shortening
  • 14 c warm water
  • 3 Tbsp sugar
  • 12 tsp soda
  • 1 12 tsp salt
  • 2 c buttermilk at room temperature

Directions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water
  2. Sift dry ingredients into a large bowl
  3. Cut in shortening
  4. Add buttermilk then yeast mixture
  5. Stir until thoroughly moistened
  6. Turn out onto floured board and knead a minute or two
  7. Roll out to 14-inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter
  8. Place on greased baking sheet Let rise for 30 minutes
  9. Bake at 425 for 15 minutes or until brown
  10. Brush tops with melted butter
  11. Yield
  12. 60 2-inch biscuits
