Icicle Pickles

Ingredients

  • 2 gal cucumbers cut in small pieces
  • 1 gal boiling water
  • 1 pt salt
  • 1 gal boiling water
  • 2 Tbsp alum
  • 16 c sugar
  • 8 c vinegar
  • 1 box pickling spices tied in cloth

Directions

  1. Pour 1 gallon boiling water over the cucumbers
  2. Add the salt Let stand for 1 week stirring each day
  3. Drain water off
  4. Add 1 gallon boiling water and the alum
  5. Let stand 24 hours
  6. Drain Make a syrup of the sugar vinegar and pickling spices
  7. Bring to boil pour over pickles
  8. Drain and heat syrup for 3 mornings Next morning
  9. Heat syrup and can or keep in a refrigerator in jar
