Irish Soda Bread

Ingredients
- 4 cups all purpose flour
- 14 cup sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 14 cup butter or margarine
- 3 to 4 Tbsp caraway seeds
- 2 cups raisins
- 1 13 cups buttermilk
- 1 egg beaten
Directions
- In mixing bowl combine flour sugar salt baking powder and baking soda
- Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal Stir in caraway seeds and raisins
- Combine buttermilk and egg Stir into dry ingredients just until moistened
- Turn out onto a floured surface and knead lightly
- Shape dough into balls and place in greased baking pan
- Pat into a 7 inch round loaf
- Cut a 4 inch cross about 14 deep on top to allow for expansion
- Brush top with milk
- Bake at 375 for 1 hour or until golden brown Yield
- 1 loaf
