Microwave Caramels

Ingredients

  • 1 c. butter or margarine
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 c. light brown sugar
  • 1 c. light corn syrup
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. nuts (optional)

Directions

  1. Combine butter, sugars and syrup in 3-quart glass casserole. Microwave 5 minutes or until butter is melted.
  2. Stir to dissolve sugar.
  3. Gradually blend in sweetened condensed milk.
  4. Microwave, uncovered, 13 to 17 minutes (240°), stirring 4 to 5 times.
  5. Check temperature during last few minutes (between soft and hard ball stage).
  6. Stir in vanilla and nuts.
  7. Pour into foil-lined buttered (butter foil well) 8 x 8-inch or 7 x 10-inch pan.
  8. Cool completely.
  9. Turn out on board.
  10. Cut squares; wrap in wax paper.
