Old-Time Beef Stew

Ingredients

  • 2 lb beef stew meat
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 medium onion sliced
  • 1 or 2 bay leaves
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 12 tsp pepper
  • 12 tsp paprika
  • dash of ground allspice or cloves
  • 6 carrots pared and quartered
  • 4 potatoes pared and quartered
  • 1 lb small white onions

Directions

  1. In Dutch oven thoroughly brown meat in 2 tablespoons hot shortening turning often
  2. Add 2 cups hot water and next 9 ingredients
  3. Cover simmer for 1 12 hours stirring occasionally to keep from sticking
  4. Remove bay leaves
  5. Add vegetables
  6. Cover and cook 30 to 45 minutes or until vegetables are tender
  7. Serves 6 to 8
