Sauerbraten

Ingredients

  • 3 lb bottom round steak or beef shoulder
  • garlic if desired
  • 2 tsp salt
  • pepper
  • 2 c vinegar
  • 2 c water
  • 12 c sliced onion
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 tsp peppercorns
  • 14 c sugar

Directions

  1. Rub meat with a cut surface of garlic salt and pepper
  2. Place in bowl
  3. Heat vinegar water onion bay leaves peppercorns and sugar together but do not boil
  4. Pour hot mixture over meat cover bowl and let stand in cool compartment of refrigerator 4 to 8 days turning meat each day
