Self-Iced Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 c dates or raisins chopped
  • 1 c boiling water
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 12 c shortening
  • 1 c sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp cocoa
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 34 c flour
  • 12 tsp salt
  • 12 tsp cream of tartar
  • 9 oz pkg chocolate chips
  • 34 c walnuts or pecans chopped

Directions

  1. Combine dates water and soda let stand until cool
  2. Cream shortening and sugar
  3. Add eggs and beat well
  4. Slowly add flour salt and cream of tartar
  5. Stir until well blended
  6. Add date mixture mix well
  7. Pour into a greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan Sprinkle chocolate chips and nuts over top of cake
  8. Bake at 350 for about 30 minutes
  9. Cool
