Waldorf-Astoria Red CakeRed Velvet Cake

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp cocoa
  • 2 oz red food coloring
  • 1 12 c white sugar
  • 12 c shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 c sifted cake flour or 1 34 c all-purpose flour
  • 1 c buttermilk
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vinegar

Directions

  1. Make a paste of the cocoa and food coloring and mix well
  2. Set aside
  3. Cream the sugar and shortening
  4. Add eggs one at a time beating well
  5. Add vanilla and the red paste
  6. Mix well
  7. Add flour and buttermilk
  8. Dissolve baking soda in vinegar and add to batter
  9. Mix well and pour into two round cake pans
  10. Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean
